Rows 1 & 2: Set Up Rows
Start the diamond crochet stitch with a multiple of 4 + 3 chains, or 4 + 2 if you begin with foundation single crochet.
Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook, SC in each chain. If you used a foundation single crochet, skip this row.
Row 2: CH 3 for a turning chain. DC in every stitch.
Row 3: Skip Stitches and Work a Front Post Treble Crochet
A lot happens in the odd pattern rows that form the diamond design. The first row of this is the trickiest because you work into the single crochets from the first row. Here’s the summary of row 3, but then read on for more details that are helpful if you’re new to crocheting around posts.
Row 3: CH 1 for a turning chain. FPTC in the third SC from the first row, *skip the stitch the FPTC would have worked into, SC 3, FPTC2Tog working in the same SC as the first FPTC and in the fourth stitch. Repeat from * to the last two stitches. FPTC in the same SC as the previous FPTC2Tog. SC in the last stitch.
Once you chain one as your turning chain, find the third single crochet in the first row. Yarn over two times for a treble crochet and insert the hook around that third single crochet. The post is basically the vertical part of the stitch, and you’re going around the entire stitch. Complete the treble crochet.
Row 3: Skip Stitch and Work Single Crochets
Work three single crochets, skipping the stitch that would have been where you worked the FPTC. This takes you to the point where the diamond corners meet.
Row 3: Front Post Treble Crochet Two Together
Next it’s time to make a front post treble crochet two together. To do this, yarn over two times and insert your hook through the same single crochet post from the last FPTC. Work the treble crochet up to the point that you have two loops on your hook. Do not complete the TC.
Skip the next three single crochets from row one. Yarn over two times and insert your hook around the post of the fourth single crochet. Work the treble crochet up to the point that you have three loops on your hook. Yarn over and draw it through all three loops to complete the FPTC2Tog.
Row 3: Skip Stitch and Work Single Crochets
Work three single crochets, skipping the stitch that would have been where you worked the FPTC2Tog.
Row 3: Repeat Steps 2-6 Across the Row
Repeat the row 3 steps across the row to the last two stitches. Work a FPTC into the last single crochet you worked a FPTC2Tog around. Single crochet the last stitch.
Row 4: Work Double Crochets
Row 4: CH 3 for a turning chain. DC in every stitch.
Row 5: First Half of a Front Post Treble Crochet Two Together
Row 5: CH 1 for a turning chain. SC 2. *FPTC2Tog working under the first FPTC and the FPTC2Tog cluster from the previous odd row. Skip the stitch the FPTC would have worked into, SC 3. Repeat from * to the last four stitches. FPTC2Tog. Skip the stitch the FPTC would have worked into, SC in the last three stitches.
Working this row is very similar to row three, but instead of working each FPTC2Tog around a stitch post, you insert the hook under the front post treble crochet as shown.
Row 5: Second Half of a Front Post Treble Crochet Two Together
Work the second half of the FPTC2Tog by inserting the hook under the clusters created by each FPTC2Tog from the previous odd row.
Row 5: Skip a Stitch and Work Single Crochets
When you complete the FPTC2Tog you’ll see the first complete diamond emerge.
Skip the stitch that this would have worked into, then single crochet three and repeat across the row.
Row 5: Repeat Steps 8-10
After completing row five, you’ll see a row of diamonds.
Row 6: Work Double Crochets
Row 6: CH 3 for a turning chain. DC in every stitch.
Row 7: Work Front Post Treble Crochet Two Togethers
This row is almost identical to row three, but you work under the FPTC2Tog clusters instead of into the SC posts.
Row 7: CH 1 for a turning chain. FPTC around the FPTC2Tog cluster from the previous odd row. *skip the stitch the FPTC would have worked into, SC 3. FPTC2Tog working under the first and second FPTC2Tog clusters from the previous odd row. Repeat from * to the last two stitches. FPTC cluster as the previous FPTC2Tog. SC in the last stitch.
Repeat Rows 4-7
Repeat rows 4-7 to continue the diamond pattern.
For this swatch, we ended with a row of single crochet to finish. You can end yours however you want, including using this as a wide border and then transitioning it to single or double crochet.
